New Delhi, September 09, 2025 — Artificial intelligence company OpenAI is in advanced discussions with Reliance Industries and multiple Indian data centre providers to bring its $500 billion global supercomputing initiative, The Stargate Project, to India. The talks are focused on infrastructure capacity, power availability, and geographic reach as the ChatGPT parent strengthens its presence in one of its fastest-growing markets.
OpenAI’s Stargate Project
The Stargate Project is a $500 billion AI infrastructure initiative spearheaded by SoftBank, OpenAI, Oracle, and MGX. Its goal is to build advanced supercomputing facilities across the globe to support next-generation artificial intelligence workloads.
India has been a priority market for OpenAI. Earlier this year, the Indian government reportedly urged OpenAI to invest part of the Stargate project domestically, ensuring local data storage to strengthen sovereignty and compliance with upcoming data protection regulations.
With India ranked as OpenAI’s second-largest market after the United States, the company has already launched tailored offerings, including ChatGPT Go, a subscription plan priced at INR 399 per month, and announced plans to set up its first India office in Delhi NCR later this year.
OpenAI in Talks With Reliance and Others
According to ET, OpenAI has held discussions with Reliance for more than six months regarding Jamnagar, Gujarat, where Reliance plans to establish one of the world’s largest data centres.
Other domestic players in talks include:
- Yotta Data Services
- E2E Networks
- CtrlS Datacenters
- Sify Technologies
The discussions reportedly revolve around data centre capacity, geographic spread, and availability of power, all critical factors for deploying a project of this scale.
- Project: The Stargate Project
- Investment Size: $500 billion
- India Partners Under Discussion: Reliance, Yotta, E2E Networks, CtrlS, Sify
- Objective: AI supercomputing capacity, local data storage
Industry & Market Impact of Stargate in India
If finalized, OpenAI’s partnership with Reliance and domestic providers could mark one of the largest technology infrastructure projects in India’s history.
The Indian data centre industry, projected to reach $10 billion by 2027, has been rapidly expanding due to cloud adoption, AI workloads, and regulatory pushes for data localization. OpenAI’s entry with Stargate could accelerate investments, create thousands of high-skill jobs, and establish India as a global AI hub.
In parallel, Reliance has been deepening its AI collaborations, including recent partnerships with Meta and Google. These efforts align with India’s broader digital transformation agenda and its ambition to lead in artificial intelligence adoption globally.
OpenAI’s India Push
Industry analysts believe that OpenAI’s collaboration with Reliance and local data centre operators highlights the strategic significance of India in the global AI race.
“India’s demand for AI-powered services is scaling rapidly, but infrastructure remains a bottleneck. By bringing part of the Stargate Project here, OpenAI can combine Reliance’s execution capacity with India’s growing digital economy,” a Mumbai-based venture capital analyst noted.
Experts also underline that diversified partnerships — including Yotta, CtrlS, and others — will ensure redundancy, scalability, and compliance with India’s evolving data governance norms.
What’s Next for OpenAI in India
OpenAI’s ongoing talks align with its broader $40 billion fundraising discussions earlier this year, in which Reliance and other global investors were considered potential participants. Each may contribute hundreds of millions of dollars to support the company’s AI infrastructure expansion.
The Stargate project is expected to roll out in phases, with India seen as a critical node due to its market size, government support, and tech talent pool.
In addition to supercomputing infrastructure, OpenAI is also deepening ties with Indian educational institutions, introducing AI copilots for students and teachers, and working on localized AI solutions.
Meanwhile, rivals such as Perplexity (which partnered with Airtel for Pro subscriptions) and Meta are also racing to cement their positions in India’s AI economy, ensuring that the competition remains dynamic as OpenAI scales up.
